U.S.S. Lawson has made an excursion to a white dwarf star system discovered at heading 62 mark 14, approximately 2.4 light years from Starbase 332; on-board stellar cartographers have named the system Sal'ei. Sensors have confirmed the following planetary classes in this system:
Orbital patterns of all Class D bodies in the system are highly unstable, with a degradation rate of 3E-12% per solar year. Surface scans of these Class D bodies also suggest that they are foreign to the system, and therefore these moons are likely celestial bodies caught in the gravitational pull of the largest planet, Class H body Sal'ei VI. Please See: Lt. Kitsch - Astrometrics Report - Sal'ei System for full analysis.
U.S.S. Lawson syncronized orbit over Sal'ei II, the Class L planet located nearest to the star. Preliminary scans indicated three continents which comprise 71% of the planet's surface, the remaining 29% covered by hydrogen-oxygen oceans saturated with high levels of potassium bromide. Atmospheric readings confirm the presence of oxygen and nitrogen, as well as trace elements of ionized iron, likely a remnant of another planetary body which was destroyed and scattered during this system's Red Giant phase. Furthermore, the continents show minimal signs flora or fauna, as well as violent weather phenomena, typically in the form of high winds and high-energy magnetic discharges created by sandstorms. Below the surface, scans indicate a comprehensive network of caves and tunnels which run beneath 63% of the planet's landmass. No signs of civilization nor sentient life detected.
Away Team dispatched. Members:
Team transported down to coordinates 1687/625, a location 2km away from the ocean with cave access to the central underground network. Evidence of civilization discovered in cave mouth: paintings created on stone walls with a mixture of nearby flora for paint, and parchments with previously unencountered writings. Images and 3D scans of immediate area captured and sent to the Lawson. CDR. Kingston and LTJG. Rosetti traveled to the nearby ocean and collected both water and sand samples from the beach. Evidence of foraging and fishing present along coastline: crude nets made of plant fibers as well as spears discovered partially buried within the sand. Materials and designs utilized in these discovered technologies confirms a pre-warp civilization just emerging from its stone age stage of development. Further scans confirm absence of sentient life within the area; Prime Directive has not been violated. CDR. Kingston notes absence of typical markers in the absence of civilization: no signs of conflict, migration or disease detected. Away team returned to U.S.S. Lawson; the following physical samples have been brought aboard and logged:
Security detail dispatched into caves to determine presence of sentient life within the cavernous network; no signs of life or civilization discovered; absence of life confirmed by U.S.S. Lawson's scans once it was confirmed that a full sweep of the network could be achieved.
WARNING: Biological Contaminant Detected
Sample SEI 7 and SEI 8 transported from Cargo Bay 1 to Laboratory 3, quarantine protocol initiated in both areas. Alien DNA detected within ink.
Preliminary Analysis: Double-Helix Alien DNA sheltered within geometric membranes comprised of silicon. Further information unavailable; pending analysis by Dr. Kasandi D'Saryn.
Carbon Dating analysis confirms that Sample SEI 7 is twenty years old; Sample SEI 9 is
three years old.
Actionable Data:
Further study of Sal'ei II is recommended. In the absence of traditional markers, there is no evidence to clarify what became of the planet's inhabitants. It may be prudent to investigate the possibility of Borg presence, or the possibility that the local population was otherwise harvested. In absence of this, investigate the possibility that the disappearance of this planet's population is somehow related to the phenomena surrounding Starbase 332.
