The first and most important thing to note here is I have a max level crafter nothing she make is currently bind on pick up sooooooo almost anything off the crafting list can easily be made by me to help fleet mates gear up while leveling ((anything past captain takes dilthium so your on your own there unless you want to by the mats yourself for dilthium and send them too me)) all I ask in return is people send me any spare samples or partical traces they dont need as my stocks of these items arnt limitless...
Ok so if your not convinced to go back lets get started, currently crafting in STO is rather easy... easy and largely pointless although revamps have been promised... all you need to do is gather the samples and particle traces from those scanning mini games and some sci related doff missions, tricorder/sensor scans will point you to the closest scanning mini game on the map.
With a fair stock of mats in hand head to Memory Alpha which is a found in Alpha Centauri sector block. Once down on the surface you will find a merchant that sells schematics for crafting as well as an auction house, mail terminal, bank ((youre mats can be in here they don't need to be in inventory to work)) and a big old crafting table.
From the crafting table you can see lists of what you can make, split up into the self explanatory categories of personal equipment, starship weapons, starship components and schematics, you are limited by the materials you have and your current crafting skill so you cant make the best stuff right away naturally first you need to practice and increase your reserch skill, current max is 1650 as far as I know.
The best way to level up your skills if you have the mats is by making shield generators, power cells or hypo sprays as well as common schematics like beam array or dual cannons until you can start crafting the better gear, how many skill points an item gives for being made is showing just before the items icon, hypo spray for example gives 10 points and the mats needed are shown at the right in the case of Hypo spray you'll need 10 mineral samples and a research skill of 0 and no schematic.
The most potent stuff you can make needs an extra set of mats, common and uncommon unreplicatable materials which can only be bought from the dilthium store or from schematics vendor for dilthium, technically these items arn't bound sooooo you might find some in AH too but they tend to be expensive, in the case of the best craftable Mk XI purple gear the cost in mats, especially during the time to craft event, is noticeably less that what is required to straight up buy a similar item from the dilthium store, however all in all your really better off saving up your dilthium for the XII's from the reputation stores.
Ok so why bother crafting... honestly as I said at the start I wouldn't bother at moment it's a bit of a pain to gather all the mats and the items from rep are always better at lvl 50 HOWEVER there are some small benefits that can be gained from crafting, firstly crafters can make Mk X purple skill kits easily and they don't even cost any dilthium unlike the ones from fleet stores, also crafting allows for good leveling gear to be made for alts... most of this stuff is also bind to account not to character so it can be mailed around alts meaning you only need make this stuff once, also crafters can make power packs that improve the power of the Jem'hadar rifle and craft a Horta ground pet to melt the faces of anyone attacking you and there is the Aegis ship set, although given it is Mk X it is not as good as the purple sets from the featured episodes.
