The Orpheus System:
Orpheus Major has one major planet in its system: the gas giant Eurydice V. A dust cloud orbiting Orpheus Major containing oxygen, magnesium, iron and silicon suggests that there were several inner terrestrial planets that were consumed by the star during its Red Giant phase. It is theorized that Orpheus's asteroid belt, a disk of planetary material orbiting between Orpheus Major and Eurydice V, was once a terrestrial planet that was torn apart by the tidal forces of the Red Giant and its Hot Jupiter.
Eurydice V is a primarily hydrogen/helium gas giant with traces of ammonia, methane, and hydrocarbons. It has 13 icy moons, which Starfleet had identified as potential candidates for mining operations. The idea was deemed politically infeasible and tabled however, given the system's proximity to Romulan space.
Orpheus Major is on the border of an area of space as yet unexplored by The United Federation of Planets. As such, the star and its system have been marked as a place of interest for future study, but no further plans have been made.
Recent History:
In 2409, the lost Federation space station Starbase 332 mysteriously appeared in a stable orbit around Orpheus Major. The Tal Shiar laid claim to the starbase but were forced to retreat when a joint task force of Romulan and Federation ships laid siege to the base and reclaimed it. The Federation has since begun rebuilding the lost station with an ultimate goal of establishing a foothold in the unexplored area of space surrounding Orpheus Major. The team has been dubbed "Project Orpheus"
Political Importance:
Orpheus Major lies near the border of Romulan and Federation territory. Given the acrimonious history between the Federation and Romulan Empire that has spanned nearly 300 years, the situation of the Orpheus system, and in particular Starbase 332, is considered politically unstable. Orpheus's relative isolation from the rest of the quadrant (nearly a month's travel to the closest settlement at warp 5) have made it vulnerable to piracy and other illegal acts. It's proximity to an as-yet-unexplored sector of space make it a desirable location for miners, claim jumpers, and settlers looking for wealth. It has also attracted the attention of governments looking to make first contact with any new species discovered, adding to its political instability. The Federation is eager to have Starbase 332 rebuilt but has not been able to dedicate a large number of resources to the project, due to the ongoing war on multiple fronts. Project Orpheus has had to rely on civilian aid, help from its Romulan allies, and resources it can gather from the icy moons of Eurydice V. Starbase 332 has been nicknamed "The Gateway to the Frontier" by Starfleet.
