Starbase 332 was commissioned and built in the relatively peaceful years following immediately after the dominion war. A new design, it's purpose was to shore up defenses in it's assigned sector and assist in refitting and rebuilding the mass of ships ether damaged or destroyed during the conflict. Sadly, the high hopes that Starfleet Command and the design team had pinned on the massive station were doomed to disappointment.
By 2378 work was almost complete when a massive ion storm swept through the region, disrupting all space traffic in the area and causing considerable damage to anything caught in it's path. Incomplete as the station was, real fears were raised for its ability to survive the maelstrom forcing an evacuation of all non-essential staff and construction workers. Leaving 332 manned only by a skeleton command crew, who elected to remain on board to batten down the hatches and ride out the storm as best they could. Several hours later a badly distorted distress call was picked up by the USS Crazy Horse from 332 requesting immediate assistance but by the time the starship was able to enter the system to investigate the base and all it's accompanying installations have vanished without a trace. Detailed searches and scans ultimately proved futile, no wreckage was recovered and despite abnormally high concentration of Chroniton particles no energy signatures matching any know weapon systems could be found. Eventually with no leads and no way forward the investigation was closed and the lost crew members were officially declared MIA. The system was placed under a quarantine order and the whole sad affair was chalked up to the tragic dangers of space exploration.
2409: Scouts belonging to the Romulan Republic trace unusual Tal Shiar activity to a remote system deep into the Khazan Cluster and find to their surprise a Romulan attack force massing at a half constructed Federation Starbase. Once the report reached New Romulus emergency discussions were launched between Proconsul D'Tan, of New Romulus, and top federation officials. Once accusations and skepticism had died out, detailed examination of the sensor data left no doubt Starbase 332 had been found at last. Over 30 years after it was lost, and two whole sectors away from its last known position but the evidence was impossible to ignore.
Within the week a joint Federation and Romulan task force was established and dispatched to the site of the starbase. After a fierce battle they routed the forces of Sub Admiral Marrus, the Tal Shiar officer who had claimed it. Finding 332 to be in almost pristine condition plans were immediately set forth to establish a Federation presence and restore the base. With resources so thin due to the Klingon War, the idea of passing up an almost fully functioning starbase, ideally placed to explore this new region of space, was too good to pass up. The operation to restore 332 was christened Project Orpheous and launched immediately.
Its goal: to restore 332 to full working order and solve at last the mystery of it's disappearance, to explore this new area of space, too seek out new life and hopefully new allies, to gather what resources it could to be sent back to Starfleet and to hunt down and new technologies that might help in the war.
